it really depends on a lot of factors. How much space do you need? Are you using it for backup or will it run all the time your computer is on? if you've got an extra hd laying around (from an old computer or whatnot) go ahead and just pop it in an enclosure and save some money. Otherwise you can purchase pre-assembled units for pretty cheap depending on the capacity needed. I recommend seagate hds and I just purchased an AMS Venus enclosure which I love. It was about $50 for the model with USB2 and firewire, $35 for just USB2. check out www.newegg.com, I was pretty impressed with their prices when I was looking. Final word, if you're comfortable doing it yourself... do it yourself and you'll be sure to be satisfied!

If it is not for the flexibility, I'd go with an internal hdd for speed issues.

After having tried out a couple of them, we prefer Western Digital, while we have good experience with Seagate too.

Basically, the manufacturer doesn't matter too much, since there are only a couple of manufacturers out there who produce the different labels (IBM hdd are produced by Hitachi, for example).

I subscribe to consumer reports and the last issue had their recommendations on hard drives. Here is what they recommend:

1. Iomega- triple interface- black series- 33090
$220

2. Seagate- Pushbutton backup- ST3300601 CB $260

Whether it be vacuum cleaners or car I have always be very pleased with their recommendations.

I prefer the external hard drives because of flexibility. You can add them as you need them and use them as backups to your internal drive. I have tried a lot of different drives, and what you buy depends upon the kind of connections you have. If you have fire wire, the La Cie fire wire drives are very reliable and stack easily. They have matching fire wire dvd burners and backup drives as well. Check out their site:
