It really depends on what you are looking for -

1) What are you using it for? If just casual listening ( in the car, at home, while traveling) than go with a hard drive player. If you are into sports or working out get a flash based player. (it will last longer)

2) How much music do you want to carry at one time?

And

3) how much do you have to spend?

There are good deals on ebay right now, especially on the 5th generation IPODs.

I got a great deal on ebay
I won a samsung 20 gig color display mp3 yh-925 for $44 w/o shipping. It retails for $199. Just luck of the draw.

I mainly use it to store images directly from my digital camera.
