I have been having periods every 10-14 days since February. Now my doctor is recomending that I have a total hysterectomy. He has tried treatment via meds that have not succeeded in solving the problem. Has sent me for a transvaginal ultrasound that came back that the lining around my uterus was extremely thick. This was 2 days after I had stopped a period. This bleeding is not anything light like you would think it would be. It's very heavy and makes me very sick. I'm only 26 years old and I just want to know what a hysterectomy will do to me.

it sounds like menorrhagia, which is the reason i had my hysterectomy 10 weeks ago. i had continuous super heavy periods for the last 2 years. i couldnt go anywhere, it pretty much stopped any kind of life i had. i got information on the nova sure the day before i had my surgery so it wasnt an option for me, but it might be for you. i dont regret having my surgery. i would do it again if i had to. you would get to keep your ovaries so hormones wouldnt be a problem since its the ovaries that control the hormones. i havent lost my sex drive, sex is still great. the recovery isnt that bad if you have the lapriscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy. pretty much your only question should be if you ever want any more children. if the answer is no, i would have the hysterectomy. its like opening up a whole new world. you never have to worry about periods, feminine products, pregnancy, stained clothes, or embarassing situations due to any of this anymore. just think, you can get by with sex and white pants 365 days a year if you want to *smile* hope this helps some.

Hi Friend..

Total Hysterectomy is nothing but complete removal of Uterus.. From the symptoms U said, I guess U R having Enometriosis.. It's wat U said thickening of Uterine walls.. There will be Unusual Bleeding, Pain, Irregular periods, U really feels sick becoz UR Hormone levels R abnormal..
I dont think U need a Hysterectomy 4 this condition because it's the last word 4 this problem...and done only if it is so serious.. Generellay this procedure does in cases of Uterine tumors.. I personally suggest U to consult another Gynecologist... May be it can be cured by taking a longer course of Hormone and other pills... U take atleast 3-4 expert opinion B4 a decision as U R 26... I guess U R not having Children... If is it so, do think a 10 times to take a decision. It's true that Having Children in case of Endomertiosis is a difficult task... but not Impossible.. If U have children and/or not wishing to have another, U can proceed with that procedure...

Do Remember, It is a surgical procedure, so have all the difficulties of it.. U may take weeks of Bed Rest, Life long Hormone pills to substitute etc... Only 1 advantage... U can get rid off Periods n associated problems U R suffering from now...

Live Healthy..
Regards..

I would only do it if I had to. I had a full hysterectomy, I had no idea of the life that would ensue. I no longer have a sex drive, as a matter of fact sex hurts. ( and not in a good way). The hot flashes are miserable. The weight gain is impossible. You seem to have a "period" type smell all the time. That is just off the top of my head! Good luck, if you need to do this. Then I guess different people probably have different issues. All I know is that if I had the choice to do it again, I wouldn't! The ONLY good thing about it, is no more blasted periods! Get ready for hormones, which many say are not safe, especially if you smoke. I would definitely get a second opinion! Good luck, with whatever you decide to do.

I had a total hysterectomy at 42 years old. And it was the best decision I ever made. I don' t have to worry about periods and I feel great. I had chronic PMS depression. However, I had already had all the kids I wanted and you may not have. If you are not sure get a second opinion. There are alot of Drs out there to check with. The only negative thing is I have to take hormones because i have no ovaries. But I was having hot flashes anyway before the surgery. God Bless.

I have had a similar problem as yours and i'm 27. Except that i was having my period every two weeks in july and august. My doctor did a hysteroscopy last week, along with a D & C. Basically they found polyups and removed them, and scraped the lining of my uterus. So far things are going much better. If you would get a hysterectomy you obviosuly would be unable to have children, and it would send you into menopause if the ovaries were removed. If oyu haven't already, get a second opinion. As about the depo vera birth control shot. That's supposed to be helpful in those matters also. Good luck to you!

Please check out other options. I was given 3 options before I chose the hysterectomy (I have two children) I am a smoker so treatment was limited with the Hormone therapy.

First was a IUD Merina - you still have a chance for children

Second was Endometrial Ablation - If you don't want children

Third hysterectomy - But only a partial since I hadn't reached menopause. Removal of the ovaries when you are so young can cause long term problems and you will still need hormone therapy.

Please Please get a second opinion.

Hi, Im 26 as well and have endometriosis. I WISH I could have a hysterectomy.
Some women have to take estrogen for the rest of their lives and some don't. My mothers friend get stuff from the health food store and have loved having all that womanly crap gone.
I would go for it!
Good Luck!

I'm not a woman, but I've read that hysterectomies have sometimes been performed when not truly necessary. The advice given was to always get a second opinion before taking such a big step. Good luck to you.

have you tried having D&C first? my sister-in-law just had D&C because the doctor said that she also have her uterine lining thick. so after the biopsy result cames, the doctor also said that she should have hysterectomy, because it could lead to cancer. but for now, the doctor prescibed provera, to see if she gets better. please do ask for second opinion.
