it is a self portrait of the painter himself, of Da Vinci, that is. look at the Mona Lisa and then compare that with pics of Da Vinci and you can sense the similarities shared: the face, the nose, the many facial structures except that he put them on the head of a woman. Mona Lisa is a self portrait that forever will be loved since it is a mystery of why the person in the painting is smiling with a smirk or what her secret is.

I heard on the discovery channel that mona lisa is actually the guys face who painted her and he just added stuff to make it look like a girl. I dont remember who painted/drew the mona lisa, but it was on the discover channel of that.

It is a painting, one just cannot see his brush strokes so he may have invented his own tools to put the paint on without leaving a mark. He invented many other things so that is very possible.
It is a painting done of a woman named Lisa Giaconda, and she was pregnant with or had just had a baby when it was painted. It was commissioned by her husband to show his love and thanks to his wife for the baby. So her secret smile may be about the life she carries.
It has nothing to do with the things suggested in the book the DaVinci Code, all of that was made up by Dan Brown, sorry, he lied.

It is an exceptional art and a masterpiece in itself potraying all the emotions of a smile. Monalisa is an imaginary person, so it is not a painting of any existing person. It can be called as a painting but more importantly it is a imaginary thought of DaVinci, put into a portrait
