It's for a skunk, which I cannot use a humane trap for, because I will get sprayed. Also I'm wondering about the legality of doing so.

There are apparently humaine skunk traps that will help you to not be sprayed. I've never used one so I'm not sure how well this works, but I would be carefull of a tranq gun. Once you shoot the skunk it might simply relax it's muscles and the whole area will smell for weeks (that I have experienced except my father shot the skunk).

Forget the tranquilizer gun. You can use a live trap (what u call a humane trap) -- just approach the captured animal with a large plastic sheet to avoid getting sprayed.
Better yet, call Animal Control and have them relocalize the animal.
Have you tried repellents first ? Much cheaper solution. See below for more details.

Its not legal for you to use,own the taranquilizing chemical although the gun you can own. Call the Humane Society and they will tell you who to call -they will drop off a humane trapping age which you can set up and when the skunk is trapped yoiu call them and they will pick up and release back into the wild. That is so unusual it makes me a bit wary for skunks usually don't come too near homes,places where humans live not like possums looking or food for skunks eat bugs,worms etc. If you are thinking of catching a skunk by knocking him out,then get him descented and you keep as pet?Be aware a skunk is a non-domesticated animal and it is ILLEGAL to have-you can be fined Minimum $1000. and possibly be chaarged with animal cruelty for would be cruel to cage. don't Do It

Just contact your local animal control people and they will do it. They will provide you with a live trap and once the skunk is inside (He won't spray just because he's in the trap) they will tranquilize and remove him.

As long as the skunk can't lift it's tail it can't spray. My father had an infestation of rabid skunks and used traps to catch them. The other option is call the ASPCA and have them set a trap.

Call your local animal shelter. They should send someone out that is trained in removing and relocating wild animals.

Go to your local animal control and ask them, sometimes they will lend them out if your problem calls for it.
