Pixels are a unit that are flexible in size. On the original Mac, the screen resolution was 72 pixels to the inch. So, the formula is 72x72 for what your eye sees on the monitor. However, when the Mac sent over a printout to the ImageWriter, the image was printed at 144 pixels to the inch -- 144x144. Later, the LaserWriter made that 300 dots -- or pixels -- per inch, to give 300x300.

So, pixels are different sizes, that count the dots' desinty of the device that renders output.

The images on web pages are 72x72 pixels per inch.

That depends on your resolution. The common display resolution is 72 pixels per inch, or dots per inch (dpi). Sometimes it's 96 dpi.
