it seems to be going into gear but doesnt want to go unless you give it lots of gas and also makes a strange noise when climbing hills

Like hondasam said, check your fluid, it should be red.
With a heavy vehicle like this, the tranny is probably shot.
DO NOT go to an AAMCO chain-type transmission store. If you want it fixed, browse your yellow pages for a local ATRA certified transmission shop.

most likely the transmission is warn out specially with that heavy of a van, the trans fluid probably smell like it is burnt, try not to go to a transmission chain like ammco try to find a ATRA shop. good luck

Is the transmission fluid full? If so is it brown and burned? Is your parking brake engaged alittle? The brakes might not be releasing completely. good luck

you need to change the filter inside the pan. and put new fluid in it.
