Well, it is a free standing object and it overlooks the ground and if you've ever been to a game you basically stand for the whole game, no sitting down at all. Especially when there are drunk Kiwis around throwing beer into the air, it's the best:)

At the sporting venue people stand on terraces & sit in the stands - a bit live driving on the parkway and parking on the driveway. It's not supposed to make sense.

Year's ago must of the pavilions had no seat's and people had to stand, and that's were the name comes from. Now a days almost every pavilion has seats but people stil call it stands.

well when the game is interesting we stand n if its a dry game u are sitting.. i guess thats why its called a stand !!
