The first movie showed it better than the second, but in the book, he is perfectly sane in the beginning, and absolutely bonkers in the end.

He went psycho in the lodge. A lot of strange spirits took control of him and if you remember the parting shot at the end, there is an old picture of "Jack" with a bunch of people in the ballroom.

Yep, Jack got psycho at the lodge - too many ghosts or something. Anyway, that is the scariest movie of all time. I don't care what anybody says...

He was struggling with alcoholism, a failing carrer as a writer, and was a border line abusive husband/father. These are traits that the spirits haunting the overlook latched on to and exploited.
He wasn't exactly psycho before he spent time at the overlook, but the man had some issues.

Hey, well actually the reason he went to the lodge was because he wanted to get away from his stressfull life in the city, but when he was in the lodge it was too quiet and he develloped a kind of psychosis where he creates two people in his mind "split personality" REDRUM REDRUM lol

I'm not sure because that movie scares me everytime I watch it. I can never make it through the whole movie without turning it off a few times LOL.
