The little bow ribbon inside of the back of mens hats come from the time when men wore bows.

Men's coats and shirts have buttons on the right, which is a throwback to when men carried swords. The access to the sword was better (for the right handed).

Buttons and hooks both got their start before the 1700s. I suppose you could compare the baggy satin shorts of today with pantaloons of the 17th century. Women's closures being left over right instead of right over left (done that way so right-handed ladies maids could dress their mistresses easier).

Fashion doesn't usually go that far back for inspiration. The cycle is usually about 20 years, so we've now looking at a reinvention of the 80's.

Remember the Jerry Seinfield "puffy shirt" episode? That look dates back to the 1700's and is a Tux favorite!
