A Marital Arts Competitor!!!!!
Read 3rd paragraph....

The Arnold Classic 2002

This past weekend a friend and I visited the Arnold Classic in Columbus Ohio. The place was crawling with thousands of people. When you visit the classic you are in for an amazing experience. You will see perfect physiques, world class martial artists, strongmen, powerlifters, and athletes from various other sports.

We arrived in Columbus at 11a.m.. The first thing we did was walk around and spot the locations of various events taking place. The events are held in different halls within the center. The first hall we entered was the bodybuilding, fitness expo. There was fitness babes and mammoths of muscle everywhere. The expo featured hundreds of supplement booths.

The marital arts festival was located in the next hall. There is a big distinction between the atmosphere at the martial arts festival and the bodybuilding expo. The people at the martial arts festival appeared to look like and act like normal people. There were no people walking around with cut off sleeves and their chests popped out like fighting roosters. There is a large amount of people at the bodybuilding expo that go out of their way to show everyone how muscular they are. Guess what guys and girls you look silly. Moving back to the martial arts exhibit; there were about 25 booths. The Hummer Push was featured in the martial arts exhibit. The event involves pushing a Hummer(8800lbs) a preset distance for time. Competitors included Svend Karlsen, Mark Henry, Mark Phillipi, Phil Fister as well as others. By observing the competitors before the event Mark Henry appeared to be the most intense. He was pacing around the Hummer while listening to his headphones. The event lasted for an hour. I have no idea who won because there was no microphones involved in announcing the event or the times. At the same time the Hummer Push was taking place there were various other events taking place around the arena. The only audio we heard was coming from center stage where the kids karate tournament was being held. Film superstar Don Wilson spoke at center stage. He was promoting his new movie.

The next stop was the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu tournament. The event was held in a small room upstairs. There was not enough room to sit, and then the security guards told us we could not stand because we were blocking people’s view. We watched the tournament for about 3 minutes before we had to exit. There was 5 or 6 booths featured that sold clothing and magazines. The legendary fighter Relson Gracie was the host of the tournament. He was sitting at a table in the center of the room watching the action intently. I am sure that next year there will be a bigger space provided for the event.

Now, it was time to go back and check out the bodybuilding expo. When you first enter the room it is hard to which way to go. There are hundreds of booths featuring equipment, supplements, magazines, hair removal products etc.... This is also the largest gathering of bodybuilders and fitness models on the earth. You can also find a number of exercise scientists and trainers on hand. There are some impressive physiques in the crowd, but the majority are want to be bodybuilders who look comical. As I began to work my way throughout the booths I began to notice there was not as many bodybuilders running the booths as there was last year. Practically every booth included at least one fitness babe. There was a small number of female bodybuilders when compared to the number of fitness girls. This is evidence for the growing popularity of fitness and the decline of Pro Women’s Bodybuilding. There is a boat load of freebees passed out at the expo. This place is a supplement junkies dream come true. I received my baggy and got my share of free supplements. Needless to say most of them went straight in the garbage when I got home. There are a couple of incidents that stick out in my mind the most about the bodybuilding expo. In one incident I saw a lady walk up to one of the fitness babes that was handing out flyers and ask "Have you had a baby yet"? The model replied "no". The lady laughed and said "I did not think so". This was a tasteless act of jealousy. The fitness girl could have 30 babies and still look better than the rude woman that insulted her. In the second incident I was walking past a supplement booth and a guy handed me a magazine , and I noticed the word Myostatin on the cover. This caught my attention because I wrote an article on Myostatin about three years ago. I told him I would like to compare his article to mine. He grabs the magazine out of my hand and asks me "what is it’? I was suprised, but I relaxed and gave him my spill on Myostatin. He gave me the magazine back and said I was the only person that he had met that knew what Myostatin was. He also gave me a handful of supplements for answering the question. I respected this gentleman greatly because he put me on the spot and tested my knowledge. As fitness pros we meet so many people that know everything about what we as fitness professionals do. This becomes very insulting after a while. If everyone was put on the spot and asked to explain their comments this would end.

The bench press challenge was conducted on a big stage in the center of the hall where the bodybuilding expo was being held. This is probably the most popular event at the expo. This contest draws the top benchers in the world. The audio was very muffled, so it was hard to hear the names of the contestants benching. There were numerous 500 and 600 lb benches and a few 700lb pushes. There was a lady that weighed 112lbs and benched 336lbs. Keep in mind, this movement is performed with a two second pause at the bottom. A fifteen year old kid benched over 500lbs. I am sure we will hear from him in the future.

At 4:00pm we traveled over to a conference room where Dr. Eric Serrano was giving a seminar on nutrition. This was the highlight of the day. If you ever get a chance to see Serrano speak jump on it. He pulls no punches and gives you his honest opinion. If you are easily offended, or like things sugar coated stay at home. Below I have listed some of the key points Serrano made during his speech.

1) Dietitians know nothing about nutrition

2) You must eat 4-6 times per day to gain muscle or lose fat

3) To gain muscle consume 1-2gms of protein per pound of bodyweight

4) Consume an adequate amount of fat in your diet particularly monounsaturated fat ( I advise my clients to consume virgin olive oil)

5) Consume simple sugars post workout

6) Liquid creatine sucks

7) No amount of supplementation causes weight loss without proper nutrition

Creatine does not have to be taken with sugar. It is preferable to use sodium with creatine.

9) Do not take creatine before training

10) Consume free form amino acids while training

The seminar lasted about 90 minutes and included a brief talk by Lyle McDonald. McDonald spoke about the formation of fat cells. He basically said when a fat cell becomes too large it tears and begins to form other fat cells. When the seminar ended I spoke with National Weightlifting Champion Chad Ikei who was in attendance. I showed him my snatch stance and he gave me some pointers on proper technique and teaching sequence.

The expo was very interesting and educational due to Serrano’s seminar. The event is a good experience for anyone interested in the fitness industry. If you decide to visit the expo next year be sure to pick up a schedule of events. I will be back next year with the report on Arnold 2003.

Solidifies the rotation. Let's be positive! And hats off to Jacob Turner, the kid pitched a HELL of a game until Gascan Coke came out.
