Genetics, birth position, exercise-- so many factors pose for many variables. There is no set time or even a predictable time range that can be relied upon here (my doctors always tried, but were always wrong). And don't go by what your own mother went through-- I was diametrically different from my mom in every way in each of my births. First pregnancies (as I assume this is for you and your spouse since you're asking) tend to go longer in labor and in getting to the day of delivery. In general, as long as you are not an excessively old mother, successive birth processes progress more quickly and with somewhat less trauma (you're all stretched out now and your body knows what to do!).
And unless you are in your third trimester AND having twins or have some unusual need (verified by your doctor) to refrain from any stress or contamination of your uterus, sex is *good*. We did it right 'till the blessed day, doctor approved, and he claimed this was actually the X-factor that finally made all systems GO!

The woman could go for weeks that way. That isn't necessarily a sign that labor is under way.
It also isn't generally possible to say how long anyone who is in real labor will take to get to 10cm either because every labor is different. Some people go from "zero to transition" in no time while others can go for hours.

That totally depends on the mother. First time moms can take from one week to the entire month to gain a cm. For me, I was gaining at a rate of 1/2 cm a week. And was induced at 4 cms. So just ask your ob/gyn how far along you are, and if you want to speed things along, go walking! Avoid sex at this time!

Hmmm...i was 2cm when my water broke, so i went to the ER at 6:30 in the morning, and didn't have the baby until 10:00a.m. So i guess it took me like 3 or 4 hours to reach 10cm, the contractions a b*tch...the more babies you have, the worst your menstrual cramps hurt....

Um hours, days, weeks. I walked around at 3cm for 4 weeks and they finally had to induce labor. Be patient, walking is good, they also say that intercourse stimulates labor too. So hey have a little fun while your waiting

If you lay on your back & whine, it will take much longer.
Try walking or sitting up let gravity do its job.
1st children usually take much longer than subsequent births.
