Some people have no idea what it is like to have loved an animal and then to have lost it. I have had to say goodbye to a number of animals over the years and the most difficult was my 2 horse's that one at a time got old and sick. Both were in pain so the vet put them down. I think your friend shows lack of compassion, but if they have not been around animals and had them in their lives, then they most likely would not see it that way. I think I would mention it to them and say that their response hurt you and see what they say.

First of all that doesn't even sound like something a true friend would say. Second, the friend would not send you that message if they were sympathetic. It sounds like they were trying to feel better about themselves or hurt your feelings.
