There are solutions on the market especially for cleaning fruit & vegetables. (ask at your grocery). Depending on what veggie it is: use cold water for leafy & rinse several times. Do only what you are going to use as excess moisture will cause deteration.
Potato, carrot, most "root" crops will support a good scrub under warm water. Do not use detergent, UGH!! Another good source for info is the local extension office (look under government offices in phone book).

It's a very good question.
In Cairo, you must use bleach mixed with water so you know you are safe.
Look at the recent spinach with E-coli problem.... makes you wonder, doesn't it?
I use frozen (the "frozen" vege is safer than the fresh vege) and for salads... I can get by without the total "freshness"...
