My grocery store (Safeway) does a neat trick. They have a club card that is free for the asking. Then they discount stuff in the store ONLY for club card members. The other thing they do is use "4 for $3" type of gimmicks. For example, the shelf tag for Rice-A-Roni says "20 boxes $10.00". Well that's only 50 cents a box, what a deal. So I load the cart with 20 flipping boxes of Rice-
A-Roni. But, they have to give you the sales price if you only want 1 box, but I ended up buying 20.

Pretty much all sales are to attract customers. Why else would they have them? When you get a BOGO, you're getting two for the price of one~what's wrong with that? Would you rather get something at 50% off or 20-30% off the original price?

Loss leader. Have something nice on sale below cost that will bring customer in. You loose money on that product in hope of them spending money on other products.

Hi. Bait and switch, imaginary free stuff like your example, overly large packaging to make the product look like a good value. Those kinds of things.
