Lines of symmetrey for a polygon? Help a teacher's proctor out.?

I'm grading papers, and the child has used the correct number of lines, which is 5, however, doesn't it need to intersect? Thanks!

He drew the Star of David, and it doesnt' intersect. I have no key for grading this problem. Thanks.

I'm assuming the "polygon" in this case is a pentagon with all sides the same length and all angles the same?

In that case the correct diagram has five lines all intersecting at the center of the pentagon. Each line should be drawn from an angle to the midpoint of the opposite side.

No credit should be given since none of the child's lines are lines of symmetry.

Hmm...interesting question. I think a line of symmetry can be either an angle bisector, or a perpendicular line bisector. In the case of a pentagon, if you extend the angle bisector all the way to the opposite side, then that would also be a line bisector. In other words, sometimes it can be both at the same time. However, it's not a requirement for lines of symmetry to go from the angle to the opposite side, so I don't think the lines have to connect.

I would give at least partial credit and maybe even full credit, but do explain to the student that he/she should draw the lines longer next time, all the way to the opposite side, so they are more visible and apparent as lines of symmetry
