Unbalanced chemistry. But this is not just for powerful drugs. Caffeine and nicotine also have an effect.
Personality depends upon the activation of certain regions of the brain. Some drugs enhance activity of part previously unused, while some hinder the "normal" patterns.
Alcohol will even kill brain cells. Drink enough alcohol over a long period and personality is sure to change.
There is another issue that deals with how habits change the way that the brain functions. New habits effect different parts of the brain. Drug use often drastically changes some habits. These can include eating habits which will effect nutrition and sleeping habits which can effect overall health. These also have an effect on the personality.

The addictive nature of certain drugs changes the priorities in ones life. With this change comes the obvious 'personality' changes as the user's daily life revolves around obtaining and using their drug of choice. Their usual likes no longer matter nor do their non-using friends and family, there is only one thing that matters & thats keeping that high. The only friends they have are their drug buddies (who can never be trusted), who care only for themselves and their high. There is also the chemical imbalances they cause in the brain, some irreversible, best advise - say no!

The drugs are in control of that person on drugs. The drugs build a wall around all there feeling hence you loose your personality, and all you want is to know how you are going to get your next fix.

Brain is affected (=changed). Addiction sort of implies a permanent or long duration change.
Unless such addiction is endorsed by Society (nicotine) it requires willpower and a tendency may be there beforehand. I find it easy to understand why people get drunk, but hard to understand why they become alcoholics. Thats why they are secretive (I think) as it is anti-social. Some people do not seem to develop a socialising influence. Drugs and alcohol seem then to feel a void.

Drugs make people go places they normally wouldn't go.
Drugs make people do and say things, they normally wouldn't.
They become walking chemicals. Not caring about themselves
or anyone else. If you look at peoples pictures before taking
drugs~~and after, taking drugs......you see a HUGE difference!

Because they become Physically and emotionally dependant on that substance, and so when they can't get their fix of whatever substance they use they become irritable or violent. I cannot go on too muchj about it as I should be elsewhere but figure out what they are on and get them help. To be dependangt on a substance is no good. Either that or keep them at arms length, hoprfully they will realise why and do something about it themselves.

By there very nature, drugs are meant to change personality, if you are ill you take drugs to make you better, if you are depressed you take drugs to cheer you up and so on ad infinitum.
