The great thing about the US is compition in industry. This makes our products great and keeps the prices down and the economy thriving. Having a monopoly on a product is in itself is not really a crime.... however, if you do have a monopoly and use your position to force others out of business then that is against the law.

Because Microsoft use their market dominance to rip everybody off by charging exorbitant prices for programs which should be much cheaper and would be so if MS had not completely tied up the market. How do you think that Gates and his cohorts could become Billionaires? They don't do it by being nice guys. They do it by shafting people as much as they can, by ensuring that people have as little choice as possible in the programs they buy. If they can make it so people have no choice then they can dictate how much people have to pay and people have no option but to take it or leave it. Other practices like making sure that their programs have to be updated and getting the Government to legislate that it be a criminal (not civil) offense to use their programs on more than one machine are all designed to screw the consumer as much as possible. Remember also that the original MS Dos was ripped off from the association of programmers who provided 'free' OS and that Windows itself was a rip off of Apple's operating system. If there were some competition maybe we wouldn't be left with MS junk which is issued when it is still a 'work in progress' and for which we all have to pay through the nose to use. MS has been treated extremely leniently.

???One of the characteristics fo a monopoly is the lack of competition. What's illegal is to actively seek to surpress the competion by means other than having better products and/or lower prices. Or by offering a product at a loss in order to deny a competitor market share.

Microsoft has bullied all the other potential competitors out of business.... That's why the guy who developed LENNOX put it out for free, just to piss off Bill gates and his evil minions.
