Yes you can. It's just like texting with a regular phone and in some aspects better [depending on what version of Palm you're using]. I have a Treo 650 with Palm OS and when I text friends and family, after my 2nd reply Palm opens it up like chat session on Instant Messenger with timestamps and all. So it actually looks I'm sending IMs.
