Earlier today me and one of my girls were at the mall and there was this lady with a boy who was probably around 7 or 8 years old. My friend who was with me is overweight and this little boy kept making fun of her. Calling her a fat pig and making animal noises and being really rude. And doing it right in front of his mom who said absolutely nothing to him and didn't even try to make him stop. It kind of hurt my friend who's a little more passive than i am but it made me angry that a parent would let her child act that way in public and not do anything about. In fact, it looked like she was enjoying it because she was grinning. Well, after a couple of minutes of standing in line and trying to ignore it, i finally confronted her and told her she needs to teach her son some manners. She got upset and gave me that 'kids will be kids" crap and we had a nice little argument. I say you should teach your kids how to act and not insult people. Am i wrong for saying anything to this woman?

And i have this to add also, if i would have acted that way as a child my mom would have slapped me silly! Parents should teach their kids to respect people!

No, you didn't handle it wrong. You handled it superbly and you should be applauded for your actions. I'm a parent of an 8 year old girl and my daughter wouldn't even think of doing anything like that because i taught her better than that and she knows what would happen if she crossed a line like that. By that woman not doing anything about it just shows how ignorant she is and she is going to have some rough times ahead of her when he gets older because he is going to make fun of the wrong person and he may just get beat to a pulp. She better try to change him now rather than later when he may wind up in a hospital after being jumped on for messing with someone's little sister or something. Parents, we have to be parents and discipline our children and teach them right from wrong. You deserve praise for standing up for your friend too. The world could use more people like you in it!

Good for you!
Now, if the child had been just acting goofy, like kids can do, that's one thing. But making fun of someone is unacceptable. Someday he'll make fun of the wrong person and get his a** kicked for it.
IOn a similar note, I had a kid in front of me stop at the top of an escalator once, and there were a lot of people behind him. His mom was watching him and laughing at people tripping. When I got to the top and started to fall, I pushed the little brat out of my way to keep from falling backwards. She glared at me and I glared right back, and mentioned that maybe her son should move before someone got hurt.
Just because someone has a child doesn't mean they know how to be a parent!

No, you are not wrong.
She should not have looked the other way when her kid said those kinds of things, I think it's ridiculous. This is probably why bullies are the way they are. Parents need to discipline their damn children.
Hell, the other day I was looking out the window when I was on the bus and I watched this man rush across the street. When the man was rushing around the block, this little boy deliberately kicked the man and the mother saw it happen but didn't say anything to her son or apologize for him.

Wrong? Not at all. You were 150% right to do it. Indeed, it's okay to let kids be kids as long as they don't insult people or hurt their feelings. I think you showed your friend you care about her. Unfortunately, the only good thing you can get out of this situations is the knowledge of it and the commitment that when you have your own kids you won't let them do these kinda things. Two thumbs up for you!

People like you should be applauded. If people (children or otherwise) aren't behaving acceptably in public it is the responsibility and duty of every good citizen to let them know. Tolerating bad behavior is like giving permission for it. It is a shame that other people in the line didn't express any disgust over the behavior.
The woman should now that people WILL hold her responsible for her child's behavior, and that child should understand that he is behaving badly. Maybe his mother will grow up someday, but if not, maybe she'll at least try not to anger others in public. Shame on her, and good for you. We all have to draw a line somewhere, and stand up for something.

Good for you for standing up for your friend. Unfortunately, there are many parents out there who lack knowledge on how to raise their children properly. Hopefully, she got the message and can teach her child not to judge people and be outspokenly rude. I don't think you were wrong at all, because her son's comments were directed towards your friend. By not correcting him, she is permitting him to be judgemental and saying inappropriate things. I would have done the same as you.

Nope. You are totally right. You did the right thing. You have to realize that parents aren't really parents anymore. Kids act how their parents let them. The frase kids will be kids only applies to how they play or when they do something cute. I can't understand why parents need help raising kids. Why do we need a tv show to show the rest of america how you can't control your kids. If you can't controll them then you have no buisness having children. If the woman was a real parent then she would have told him to apologize to your friend.

I'm 28 years old and my mom would STILL beat my *** if I pulled something like that. Maybe it's a generational thing, but my parents taught me to respect-as well as to stand up for people who are being treated unfairly. Good for you. (You have more restraint than I would!)
