I think you haven't installed the USB Host Controller.

Go to "Start" and click on it.

Go to "Settings" and click on it.

Go to "Control Panel" and click on it.

Go to "Printers and Hardware" and click on it.

Now, look to your left and you'll see a little box to your left upper corner with "Add hardware". Click on it.

The Hardware Installation Wizard will now appear.

This is a good time for you to insert the Motherboard installation CD in the Drive.

Click next and the Wizard will look for the suitable driver for the devices connected but not installed.

If it doesn't see anything, it'll ask you if the devices are connected. Click "Yes" and then it'll ask you to choose from the list it'll show where the first few entries will have a big thick yellow question mark before them. Make a note of the details given there and then insert the other Installation CDs that you have and click next till you get them installed.

In the rare event that you don't have the relevent CD, since you'd made a note of the details of the missing drivers, you can now go to Google and search for the name of the device with the suffix "driver" and find it. Please do not type in the gamut and search; but, instead do a single field search for each required driver individually. Then download and install them.

This should resolve the issue.

All te best,.

Cheers

the USB port is a plug and play device. When you plug in a device you should get some sort of notice that the device was plugged in. If this is the first time then it will automatically attempt to load the drivers for the device. Sometimes loading the correct driver will fail so you will need to remove the existing driver and reload it using the disc that came with the printer. If you don't have the disc then you can download it from the manufactures web site usually from the site's support section.

Have you installed the USB Host Controller driver? This would be on a CD that came with your computer/motherboard. I believe that this is what the Tech guy would have been talking about when he said that you needed to configure the USB ports.

Once this has been done, the USB ports should automatically detect when a USB device is added to your computer. You would then be asked to add the driver for your USB device. This driver would be found on the CD that accompanies your device (i.e. printer/scanner, etc.)

Windows should configure this for you, but if not, then you can go to drivers.com and sign up, and you tell them what kind of computer you have, and they'll download the driver you need.
