Does the ACLU really care about our rights?

I joined the ACLU because I thought they were fighting to protect my rights. They put my name in a computer and started asking for money every two weeks. Then they take on all these fights with major corporations, the ones that can write a check to ACLU to make it go away. They fight to take down the ten comandments, and other religious things that really get media attention and the checks rolling in. But do they really care about our rights, or is this just another organization sucking money from the ignorant folks like I used to be?
