It really irritates me--especially while they're waiting for you to get your money out and they start pushing the tip jar towards you.
If a friend and I stop at Dunkin' Donuts or some place like that and we sit at a table for a long time visiting and the counter person asks if we want anything else, more coffee, whatever--in a nice way--I might hand them a dollar. I usually do this only if the service is extraordinary.
Where does it end? If we go to the drive-up window, are we going to have a tip jar stuck in our face when they hand our bags of food to us?
I agree with the person who said that someone cheered her(?) up so much she left a tip--I'd do the same thing if I were having a really bad day and they made an effort to be nice.
What really gets me is one of the Baskin Robbins here where I live? There are usually three kids working at one time even though the place isn't that busy. One boy in particular has a really bad habit of opening the tip jar--which is a large milkshake container that is clear plastic--and counting the money after each customer pays. Is he trying to embarrass or shame us if we don't leave a tip? Is he worried that one of the other kids is taking money out when he's not looking?
If it's a place I go to on a fairly regular basis, and the counter person is always nice I'll make a point to tell the manager and mention that person by name.

If they had to go out of their way to run out to your car, they at least deserved to be offered a tip, which many times they'll refuse. (I'm ignoring Sonic, where they're paid to do that anyway....even so, I'd still tend to leave some tip there, maybe not the full 15%, just because it is personal service). Otherwise... its fast food. That's one of the reasons I consider going to fast food; I don't have to spend extra money on tip.
Fact is, because people generally don't tip, It probably doesn't look good if a person working at a fast food joint had more money in pocket than when they came in. They may look like they were skimming off the cash register. The hassle may be more trouble than the worth the small amount of change they might get if they did receive tips).
(Note: I do recall being at a Taco Bell one night kinda depressed, and the manager there was so cheery it was contagious, and I gave her a dollar just for making me happy. I think that made both of our days.)

Tip if u wish, but what is the tip for ? At most fst food restaurants u carry ur own tray to the table, get ur own drink and clear away ur tray when done. The people waiting on u never leave the back of the counter. Tips r generally given for good service provided to u at ur table, I see a big difference between that and a fast food establishment.

No, we should not be tipping them and shame on anyone who does. This will open a whole new can of worms, all of them will want and expect to be tipped. This is a bad idea! They should not expect is. The only people who should be tipped are service employees, who actually service you a drink, meal, dessert. A service, such a haircut, car wash-OK, etc. but lets get real-Subway, dun-kin dough nuts. What's next McDonald's?

One example I like, is Sweet Tomatos. It's a buffet, yet, someone constantly comes over asking if they can get you anything or offers you cookies or to clear your table.
I dont use the 10%/20% rule on this, but, normally i tip them $1 for each person at the table. ST's service is always good.

I was really on the fence about this until I watch my girlfriend tip the girl at starbuck's and I thought she had lost her mind, but she goes there every single day and they know her and take great care of her. It's only a couple dollars but it goes a long way for them to serve you better. If you go to the place alot I would tip depending on the place.

you cannot tip in these type of restuarant because the emplyee get his or her money from the sales of the food is sold as an example mcdonalds every cheese burger is sold only 10 cent is going to the profit of the store so if a cheeseburger is 95 cent 10 cent of it goes to the store .and many store do not like people to tip. when i get my pay check at mcdonalds . it will say "from our customers " the customer is my paycheck without them i do not have a pay check so be nice to us we are the ones keep you an america going

I think it depends on the person. Personally, i don't tip in fast food restaurants. They are basically doing their jobs. Unless, the customer services are fantastic. So it is up to you. =)

I never ever tip.. tipping is so retarded. Maybe those people should go to college and maybe get a real job above minimun wage. They should tip me for eating their garbage they pass off as food.

If someone goes out of their way for me or does something special, then I drop a buck or two in, otherwise, I don't see a point.
