I see two numbers on the email which could be the person's ISP number. What website do I use to find out the address that corresponds with these numbers?

You may not be able to really know who sent it, but you might get a clue. Open mail and click on options, General preferences, scroll down to Messages, and click on Show all headers. Save it. Open the mail and go to the line that says x-Originating IP. High light and click copy. Go to this site and see where it originated.

e-mail headers is a good start but email headers can easily be spoofed. I can spoof an e-mail header by simply typing what I want.

The best way to find out where it REALLY came from is by asking your ISP. They will need to check their mail logs.

I've asked my ISP before but they're a bunch of idiots from india who don't know anything.

However, if you are certain that the e-mail is legit, then you can find out technical contacts from web sites like www.samspade.org. When you are on samspade, type their domain name in the first box and click "do stuff".

This is the contact information for yahoo via samspade.org.

Unless you actually believe the email came from a human individual who typed it out and it's threatening or scary, I wouldn't even bother. Spammers can and do spoof IP addresses, emails, and often use hacked computers to send their crap out to us all. So tracking the source is not only difficult, but often impossible.

If you're really concerned, turn it over to your ISP and local law-enforcement followed by a phone call. If you're just curious, you can give it a try, but good luck finding accurate information.

To try though, view your emails full headers or the message source to see how it got to you. This will be confusing if you've never seen it before.

There are several tools I use. First you need to know how to read the header. That's the first link listed below.

It tells you to use samspade to help trace the correct IP. Sometimes it shows you the abuse address to send the email to. Sometimes it doesn't below are some other addresses to help you. Yeah it's a lot of work.

first try to see the "Full Header" there will generally be an "Originating IP" copy that number, it will be something like aa.bb.cc.dd where all these are digits.
go to:

http://www.arin.net/whois

type or paste the originating ip in the box and the site will give you the details of the sender. there r large number of other sites as well
http://www.abika.com/Reports/verifyemail.htm
http://www.mse.co.jp/ip_domain/index_e.shtml
u can also just try googling

First of all, make sure you are seeing the most complete header information of the email. I think you get that from the view menu selection.

Right click on the return address and select "properties," then "details," then "message source." That should give you all the information you will need.

Hope that helps.
