Seems to me that both movies take place in the same universe...Ridley Scott directed them both and I was wondering whether he just made up the environment or if the idea came from somewhere else?

The reason I think they take place at roughly the same time is because an advertising drone in Blade Runner makes reference to offworld colonies like those encountered in the Alien series.

Through A Scanner Darkly, Minority Report, both based on stories by the same author Philip K. Dick. If you like Dark City, Check out The City of Lost Children, a French film from the same director of Aliens 4.

Blade Runner & The Fifth Element are very simular and I think both were by the same author. They both feature cars on highways in skies. So featured by George Lucas in Star Wars: Episode II: Attack Of The Clones, which I think was a homage.

The only two movies I can think of that take place in parallel universes are Dark City and The One...With Jet Lee!!!! the Movie where Jet Lee is a cop and has to fight is other counter parts of his to become stronger...Hope I could help.

I just thought they took place in the future. BLADE RUNNER not that far into the future. ALIEN very far into the future.
