In football, a halfback running into a pile of players and moving forward maybe an inch, at best. That would be a nominal gain.

You hear this word a lot when talking about fees: a nominal fee.

A nominal fee would be a really low rate - 25 cents to connect a phone call, $1 to park your car, $1 to take money from an ATM.
