I am a big animal lover, 2 dogs, 1 cat, they are like family. I am having a problem with fire ants in my yard, & if you don't have them in your area & you don't know this they bite and it HURTS! It especially hurts my kids. I've been wanting to put poison out to get rid of them but I haven't because I don't want to hurt my neighbor's dog. I have asked her to keep him out of my yard, told her what I need to do, but she just says 'he won't bother it'. I would hate for anything to happen to the little guy, but I have to think of my children. My question is, if I put the poison down & her dog gets in it and gets sick or dies am I liable for what happens to him? I mean, could I get in legal trouble? Oh yeah, of course I'd keep the kids out it.
Thanks for knowledgable answers.
I'm posting this in 2 categories because it's very important to me and I need as many answers as I can get.

If the dog comes into your yard, especially after you've asked your neighbor to restrain him, you are not liable for what happens to him if he should ingest the poison. Your neighbor is responsible for keeping her dog in her own yard, particularly if there are leash laws in your town.

Top Choice is a slow acting contact kill that last about 12 months. It will take 4 to 6 weeks, but results are great. Apply at 2 to 3 lbs per 1000 feet.

Advion is a 48 hour kill that is non-toxic to almost everything but ants. Apply at 2 lbs per acre.

Both products cost about $40 per bag and work!!!

If you go with a bait like Amdro, you MUST apply every 90 days to be effective. DO NOT pour a pile on the ant bed. Application rate is on the bag.

Make sure all these products are applied to flower beds too.

Check local feed stores.
Home Depot sometimes has Top Choice.

Pets will not be effected unless you feed it to them by the pound.

This a bad problem, but maybe I can help. I worked in a Feed & Seed for over 5 yrs, and sold allot of products for ants, ticks, fleas, etc. If what you are putting out is "Amdro", well it will be safe for the pets., trust me I put it out all the time, and the pets won't go near it. It has a powerful odor, and they can't stand it, burns their noses(cats/dogs). Now kids you will have to be sure the kids stay away from the mounds where you put it, just in case they get it into their mouth/eyes.(especially if you just put it down) There is this product called 'Terminator",found at Wal-Mart and other places, it works wonders against black ants, spiders, etc, you need to mist or put the sprinkler on after you broadcast this ok., or you can buy 'Sulfur Granules"(sold at most seed stores) it is great too., and cheap for 50lbs. I use to be in contact with the state agricultural studies, when i needed information, and they told me, the major harm for pets, kids, and adults is that you have to intake allot of these products in order for them to make you sick, or die. The only way you could do this is my contamination of food or water., so just be careful to not put any of these products near their foods., ok? Hope it helps a little, Good Luck, and just watch where you use it & store it.(Keep it away from kids,in case of curiosity.

First, call your local animal control office and make a complaint about your neighbor's dog always being "at large." If you don't want to do that and you don't want to risk the dog injesting poison, which I don't think will happen, put down grits and not poison. Supposedly, the grits will be taken into the ant community and fed to the queen. The queen will is supposed to "explode" when the grits swell inside her. It's worth a try.

Try Amdro fire ant killer. Very effective although a bit expensive. It's a very attractive bait to ants, but my two small curious dogs don't find it the least bit attractive. The label says to keep pets out of the treated area, but I have never had a problem with it. My babies wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole. But it will sure get rid of those ants! Good luck!

If you have warned your neighbor of what and when you are going to put this poison down it now becomes their responsibility to keep their dog out of your yard. It doesn't sound nice, but the dog is trespassing onto your property and you have given notice to the owner of the effects of what this poison could do.

Hi, i don't know where u live, but here in Australia, you would not be held responsible because that dog should actually be restrained or kept in an enclosed area. Its owner would actually be liable to pay for any damages it causes on someone else's property.

Ants become a nuisance when they enter homes. Instead of spending money on costly pest control, you can get rid of ants by removing the food source and using soap water. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/mdhlm useful.
