Maybe. I'm not an admirer of Gandhi. He was an apologist for the Japanese, thinking they wouldn't want to rule India if they won the war. He was stunningly idiotic about the inevitable partitioning of India should they gain independence. The India and Pakistan standoff has been going on for nearly 60 years an now both nations have nuclear weapons!
Peace? heroic character? This guy isn't first in line.
Then, yes, there are the family anechdotes...

I am not too fond of Gandhij, but after reading a lot about him, what I think is he was sharp enough to have had made his life public, and that is the reason behind his popularity. I could never relate myself to his ideologies, as I believe you cant practice non-violence all the time. I believe in employing controlled violence to counter violence. I dont know why we still give half of the credit for Independent India to Gandhiji and Nehru. Rather patriots like Bhagat Singh and Subhash Chandra Bose have done a lot for independence. How can anyone forget Gandhiji's role behind Indo-Pak conflict. I still fail to understand how Gandhiji in that position failed to tacle such a sensitive issue.

NO, Actually leadership was thrust on him without his Choice.
Therefore he saw the wisdom of accepting the chance, and he developed the charisma of speaking in Public, to his liking and that of everyone else. Whereas fatherhood and Husband material were chosen by him. H started in S. Africa his career as a private practitioner, strictly for Money. Not for Bharat maata, and South african Mata or Humare Bhai log.

Yes, to the ones that needed someones knowledge, peacefulness and love. Many people that seek these things in life grab hold and go as far as they can with this person, until they find their own ability to make their own choices. As you stated, family are the ones that are sacrificed by this person. Some return to their families, because that is where they first received their knowledge, peacefulness and love, the circle of life.
