I sooked a wash rag with cod liver oil, put in on my mom's leg covered it with plastic, and then put hot water bottle on it. Then my mom washed the wash rag, not her laundry room, towels, dryer and her lazy boy chair smell like dead fish.

OK I just went through something similar, I had kerosene oil on my favorite shirt, everyone told me to throw it away, well I washed it with bleach with other clothes and they all smelled bad and so did my washing machine and dryer! So I went and got a book published in the 40's and it said to soak in vinegar( plain white distilled) for up to 5 days and to washed it in vinegar and soap a couple of times. Do NOT run it through the dryer until the smell is barely noticeable and use a nice fabric softener toward the end of the process but not at the same time, it will compromise the effect of the vinegar. for me this process did work, it took sometime, but it was worth it. And it got rid of the smell in the washer and dryer, have patience you will succeed. As for the lazy boy, spray it with 3/4 vinegar and 1/4 water let set (saturate the area effected) and then spray it down with that Lysol air eliminator. If you have pets I would NOT recommend fabreez. I hope you all the best

Try washing a load of towels (including the cod liver oil towel) in hot water with detergent and a little bleach. Place towels in the dryer to spin dry.

Just had a thought. You know how we eat seafood with lemon squeezed over it to cut the fishy smell? What if you soak the towel in a lemonade solution (without the sugar)?

Try re-washing everything and add a cup of baking soda to the wash machine. It sounds weird, but it helps eliminate odors really well.
