You say you have Symantec AntiVirus, but, do you have a Firewall and any AntiSpyware programs.
You need a Firewall. Windows XP SP2 has a built in firewall. Make sure it is turned on. Go to Start>Control Panel>Security Center>Windows Firewall>dot to turn on the firewall.
You should also have three AntiSpyware programs providing full time protection. Windows Defender Beta 2, Spybot Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster is a very good start.
You can get all three of the above programs at this download site. You will find all three programs in the first RED box.
http://www.filehippo.com/
When you go through the setup steps for Spybot be sure to watch for and check the box for "Tea Timer". This is what turns it on to provide full time protection. Otherwise, it is only good for scans.
You can also go here and read this site. It will give you a very good education in protecting your computer.

If they are quarantined, it means that they have been separated and prevented from spreading. A virus normally replicates infecting many files. quarantined file, though contains virus, is prevented from infecting furthur files and from doing furthur harm to your pc. Harm already done is done. Its always better to clean the file first, only if not possible, should u quarantine. No antivirus software is foolproof. U need to update the virus definitions regularly to get most current protection. U also need antispyware softwares like spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org ) and adaware (http://www.lavasoft.de ) to prevent and delete spywares which are different and not detected by antivirus softwares. u also need a good firewall to prevent hacking and spywares contacting their servers.
Again virus and spywares comes visiting from a particular site only (or manually putting virus infected files from cds or something). It cannot come from nowhere. so always go to trusted site. Before going to unknown sites, test the site safety and read reviews from http://www.siteadvisor.com . Worms are different and can come from anywhere, no matter where u go, by taking advantage of network flaws.

hmm..let me see..maybe you download files from an unsafe website that contains a lot of viruses..
my tip for you is go to www.download.com and download
Mc Afee site advisor
with this, you will know which website contains viruses and spams so you won't be having anymore problems when you're surfing th web.
not only that you should be careful when downloading a file from a website but you must also be careful when sharing files with your friends and family, some files that they give you may contain viruses without you knowing it.
secondly quarantine viruses won't infect or spread on your computer because it is seald in one place that no virus can get out.
but to be sure, run virus scan several times and if it says that your computer is clean then worry not.
good luck

The only anti virus solution anyone should be using is Kaspersky Lab, and no I don't work for them.
If you absolutely need a free solution I would use avast. See links...
I suggest you stay away with anything that comes in a "big box"
hope that helps

Yes.
If they are in quarantine, they have been detected and dealt with. You dont have to worry about these.
