I remember when computers took up a whole room and sometimes a whole floor in a building and the room or floor had to be specially air-conditioned to keep the working parts cool so they wouldn't overheat and blow up.
Also, the people who were in charge of them often named them.
You would have fun checking that out.
Happy surfing.

My dear, you should have seen what they were like in the 1960's! Thirty years ago is nothing. However (in 1971) the comptuer they had at Weslean college in Bloomington/Normal, Illinois filled an entire room(and it was one of the most modern updated ones). One computer filled one whole room itself. If you ever go to Cape Canaveral/Kennedy Space Center in Florida, if you take the tour of the older part of the center, you will see computer stuff that is from the 1960's that it took several rooms and an entire huge building for one whole computer to fit into.

I felt old when I was the only one in a room who used punch cards. Each card is a line of code. You spent a whole day punched out your program and input data (hundreds of cards). You took the deck to the operator. She put your deck into a batch job. One hour latter, you went to pick up your print out. Too bad, you found you made a stupid syntax error. So, you took out that card, typed a new one, and took it to the operator again. On the way, you tripped, and cards scatters all over the floor. So, you picked them up, spent two hours to sort them out. Then, you gave it to the operator, and she complaint those cards with dirt would ruin the machine. So, you went back, typed some new cards. The result came out at midnight, and you had a due date to meet. Then, you found your program had a bug, ....

Another Dell Laptop Goes BOOM!
Well this is starting to get ridiculous.
On the heels of last month's Dell-laptop-turned-into-tower-of-flames comes a new story, with a bunch of scary, scary pictures. Unfortunately there's not much of a story to go along with the pictures. The laptop was sitting on a desk (closed), then it's suddenly on fire. The resulting chaos required the fire department to be called and the building cleared.
The poster also relates a pretty awesome story about the aftermath (and I fixed the spelling): The engineer whose laptop it had been ... heard there was a fire and that we all had to go outside. Being the noble engineer that he is, he quickly wanted to grab his laptop!
Whoops.
Still no response from Dell on these issues aside from a vague "we're looking into it."
Thanks, Engadget!
