I am deeply Republican and yes Bush has made lots of mistakes. His biggest mistake was Iraq. I admit it. But nobody can say his administration has been easy. There have been very few presidents who have lost over 3,000 U.S. citizens in the space of a few hours. I think that had Bush not retaliated for the 9/11 attacks, people would still be calling for his impeachment but for different reasons. Bush was thrown into a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation and has tried to do the best job he could, which was not quite on par, to avenge the almost 6,000 U.S. citizens that were killed by terrorists between Jan. 1980 and Sept. 12, 2001. To say that Bush is the greatest president ever is wrong, but likewise to say he is the worst president is also wrong because nobody in this country that is alive today has had to go what he went through. My point is that sometimes people do the wrong things for the right reasons and that if we had been thrown into the situation Bush is in, we probably wouldn't have handled it very well either.
As a reciprocating question, if Gore had become president instead of Bush in the 2000 elections, how do you think he would have handled it?

Not sure I qualify as a "conservative"...more of a libertarian, but do favor some things the conservatives support and oppose some liberal policies.
But Lord, yes...Bush has really been a disappointment.
For one thing, he can give a decent speech if he's memorized it...but you get him "off the cuff", and he flounders around and looks about like I used to in junior high when I'd have to stand up and give a report on a book I hadn't read. Also, I've been terribly disappointed in his handling of Afghanistan and Iraq. (I realize it's probably Rumsfeld's fault...but Bush is the President...and should have canned Rumsfeld's *** long ago.) I'm also disappointed in his absolute failure to do anything about illegal immigration. And that damn Patriot Act should immediately be overturned as unconstitutional.
The only two things I have really approved of that he has done are:
1. He lowered taxes across the board, exactly like JFK had done. (Only there were no Democratic cries of "tax cuts for the rich" when JFK did it.) And he supports the elimination of the death tax. I don't believe anyone should have to pay more than 25%, and I think the death tax is absolute heinous. Most wealthy people did not inherit their wealth like Ted Kennedy, but worked hard for it...took some risks, some of which could have been catastrophic. I think it's disgusting that the government wants to come in...say "Well, you're dead now...we can always use more money...and we've got the power, so we're going to just confiscate what you worked hard for."
2. Also, Bush has appointed two supreme court justices who (I desperately HOPE) will rule based on what the constitution and our laws clearly STATE...not just on what various factions might like them to say. There's nothing worse than a court saying "Yeah, I know that...TECHNICALLY the law says this...but we'd really like it to say something else...so wink-wink, nudge-nudge...we're going to pretend that it DOES." This type of judicial activism has, regretably, been used by both liberals and conservatives...and needs to STOP.
One of my biggest gripes with Bush is that he's made it possible for Hillary Clinton to actually have a chance to get elected. Ordinarily, she's so damn divisive that I don't think she'd have a chance...and most Democrats wouldn't support her for their nomination, just because they want so much to recapture the White House. But Bush's presidency has been such a failure, that a lot of the Republican base will not turn out...and we're liable to end up with a REAL piece of sh*t as President.

I'm a conservative and I will say Bush has made mistakes. Please allow me two observations though:
#1 Notice how many conservatives answered your question with a yes. Also notice how many liberals said it would never happen.
#2 The difference that I see is when Republicans see one of their own make a mistake, they demand that it be corrected. Such as the Foley creep. He has resigned after outcries from both sides. Yet when a liberal (Gerry Studds D-Mass) commited an offense that was even worse (he RAPED a 16 year old page) the democrats did NOT demand that he resign, in fact Nancy Pelosi voted FIVE different times to give him a chairmanship of a committee AFTER the rape was known. That is hypocrisy and it is WRONG!!

Mr. Liberal, hello. I'm Mr. Right winger.
I don't think a single person can come up with ANY president that has not made mistakes. Some cost jobs and livelihoods. Some cost lives. With all of the polar representations you and I hear or read from the internet and news, it makes sense to me the flat out passion that people feel about politics. Like or hate. Left or Right.
