I was just curious does anyone seriously know where the saying Al Gore invented the internet came from?

He really didn't.

His original comment was during a 1999 interview on CNN, where, as a congressman, he took credit for promoting the development of the Internet.

When taken out of context, however, it sounds a lot like he was the guy who created the Internet.

In the '80's as a Senator, Gore introduced a bill which when the first President Bush signed it, provided funds to further the development of the network that was the basis for the internet. He didn't "invent" it, just recognized the need for funding it.

I forget who or what group of people invented the first networks that were the internet, but my father as a student of Carnegie Mellon got to be among the first few to use ARPAnet. The person who invented the internet as we know it, the World Wide Web, is Tim Bernards-Lee, a limey, and a right proper one at that.
