MARS, Always known as the Red Planet, has probably been the source of more science fiction (good and bad) than any other planet. Mars is much smaller than Earth, but recent research shows that it once had flowing rivers. Mars also has a canyon that stretches over 2000 miles

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun, located in between Earth and Jupiter. Mars is much further away from the Sun than Earth, with an average distance of around 140 million miles

Mars is a good choice for a travel destination. When it is at its closest to the Earth, called favorable opposition by astronomers, it is only about 35 million miles away. At its greatest distance from the Earth the trip would be about 250 million miles, so travel dates should be considered carefully.

Distance of mars from Earth varies from 36 million miles (nearest planet after Venus) to over 250 million miles. Proportionately, this six-fold distance variation is the greatest of any planet

Because of the orbital patterns of Mars and Earth around the sun, there are multiple distances between the two planets. However, for simplicity, there are two distances you can calculate from.

The shortest distance (minimum) is 54,500,000 Kilometers
The greatest distance (maximum) is 401,300,000 kilometers.

It varies greatly, depending where they are in their orbits.

Here is some information from a website at Cal-Berkeley:

Earth distance from Sun: 93 million miles

Mars distance from Sun: 142 million miles

So, if they were both on the same side of the Sun, they could be as close as 142-93 = 49 million miles.

If they were on opposite sides of the Sun, they could be as much as 142+93 = 235 million miles.

These numbers are very rough, but what's a few million miles?

It's quite far and I think you go this way, no that way, no this way, no that way.
