I work a job where I stand all the time for 8 hours a day , 5-6 days a week. Recently my foot has had some mild burning sensation to it, particularly at the top region, spread out, but I have been ignoring it. Tonight, as I got out of my car and stood up, I felt a very severe burning sensation, much worse than before on my foot in the same area...like something exploded in there...just wondering what it may be before I head to the doctors. Please don't tell me to go see the doc, because I will, I just want to see what it may be first. thanks.

I'm a dancer as the other person who answered before me and I sometimes feel pain on the top of my foot but it's not like a burning. A burning might mean that you've got fasciitis or tendinitis or maybe just an inflammation of some sort because of standing so much. It could be diabetes or circulatory problems like the first guy said. Or it could be something with the nerves in that area... Your shoes might create the problem...

I was listening to the radio and this woman said that she was feeling a burning sensation in her leg and that the doctors said that she had varicose veins. It's not fun if that's what you got but at least it's the first step towards treatment and cure.

Sorry, I'm not a doctor so I'm not sure if what I'm saying is correct. Good luck at the doctor. Let us know how it went.

The burning feeling you're experiencing is called parasthesia. It may be arthritis. It's most likely NOT athlete's foot, because that burning sensation is concentrated on the sole of the foot. In my opinion, it's most likely sensory peripheral neuropathy. This results from damage to the nerves that transmit sensation to arms, hands, legs and feet. It is known to be a serious cause of chronic burning feet. Some of the causes of sensory peripheral neuropathy are diabetic neuropathy, alcohol abuse and vitamin b12 deficiency anemia. Your standing 8 hours a day may be either causing it or worsening it. You may have put too much strain on your metatarsal tendons. I know you said that you didn't want to hear this, but stop wasting time, and go to a podiatrist. If the problem is too much strain on a nerve, it could result in permanent numbness if left untreated.

It may be a number of things. Good thing you're going to see a doctor. You might be referred to a podeatrist or physical therapy. It might be just a matter of bad shoes or needing insoles. You asked it under dancing, I'm a dancer, I had a foot injury that resulted in pain in the upper part of the foot. Mine was piercing pain, not burning sensation though. Physical therapy, carefully selected dance shoes and a time away from dancing fixed it. I hope yours get fixed relatively easily too.

It could be a number of things. How is your cholorestrol level. It could be poor circulation. Or even symtoms of diabetes. Check with your doctor. That would be the best option. It could be something minor or serious. Since I have a similar type job where I'm on my feet the same amount of time, I also experience that feeling from time to time. Also it may be time for better shoes with supports in them.

It sounds like it could be contact dermatitis or possibly fungal.
Try changing shoe and sock combinations to see what is most comfortable. Also a small bit of foot powder can help keep feet cooler. My experience with this has been it is the result of feet heating up from muscle use with inadequate ventilation. You might even consider bringing a change of socks or shoes to help make those puppies happy!
