Hard to say! Crime and Punishment good book but a Status symbol saying you've read it I think.

I enjoy the Rebus series of crime novels by Ian Rankin. He is such a good writer and he really has his finger on the pulse.

Hard to pick a best, but the first one that comes to mind is "The Maltese Falcon" by Dashiell Hammett. The book is even better than the movie, as the books almost always are.
