Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA). It's a nice place. I don't live in Detroit, but I still live in Michigan. I have been to the DIA twice for field trips. I liked it a lot. According to Wikipedia, the DIA has "one of the largest, most significant art collections in the United States."

DIA as the man said... and there's an Annie Liebowicz (sorry, slaughtered the spelling) exhibition going on there now (photographer, best known for her candid portraits of celeb's).
Down the street from the DIA (on Woodward) is C-Pop, a modern/contemporary gallery. I was there two weeks or so ago, and they had a nice mix...pieces from Camillo Pardo (he designed the FordGT and the new Mustang, but also does fine art), some metal art from the Detroit Bros (you may have seen them on Biker Build-off). I believe there's a couple of other art co-operatives & galleries within a stones throw of there.
In the Burb's...Birmingham has a number of galleries...and it's an upscale area, no worries walking around looking like a tourist.
When in the D...do please use common sense. Head up, no flashing of cash, be aware of your surroundings.
Public transport is pathetic, so if you want to get around outside of the D, do rent a car.
Royal Oak's got one or more galleries left... Adriana on Main St. Lots of electic pieces. Great restaurants too...just walk around till you find what you like. (both RO and Birm'hm are about 20 min north of Detroit...just follow Woodward north, & bam.
