Put a few tablespoons of baking soda down the drain and then follow it up with some white vinegar. It will foam up and help clean it. The baking soda will help with the smell, too.

is it both sides or just one? The root of the problem is that something in the drain, not one the sink, smells. I see many good answers that may work. I will usually clean out the sink basket strainer with a good heavy cleaner. The strainer or plug part I put in the dishwasher. Drano or similar cleaner will remove any grease that has built up on the walls of the pipe.
On the disposal side about the only thing you can do is put a heavy cleaner or detergent (I use lemon dish soap). The detergent helps clean out any left over food. Flush really good after. The smells will always return if you use the disposal so clean it every so often.

Under normal circumstances it shouldn't stink so I'm going to assume you have a garbage disposal. If in fact you do then I'd guess that you need to clean the underside of the boot ( usually the black rubber thing that you are scared to put your hands in)
These usually lift out. Make sure the disposal is turned off and just reach in and grab it and pull. They pop right out and right back in. They get a build up of sludge and just plain "ick" on the under side. Clean it off good and soak it in bleach to kill any bacteria or even throw it in the dishwasher ( tie it to the rack so it doesn't wind up in the bottom) If you don't have a disposal and you only get a sewer gas smell when you are running water you might have a vent blocked. In this case call a plumber to come investigate further.....good luck...." A healthy sink shouldn't stink"

I just want to add that some of these suggestions are really good, but if you try one such as drano, be sure to rinse it out very very well before you try another method to keep toxic fumes from forming...and also if you have a septic system you need to be careful about what you put down your drains.
The lemon idea is very good if you have a garbage disposal...I use that method and I also wipe the drains and bottom of the sink with the lemon peel...and then run hot water...makes it smell nice.

If the problem lies within your garbage disposal unit that is easy to clean. Pour one half-cup of liquid bleach into a glass, dilute with equal part water. While the disposal is running slowly pour bleach mixture down disposal. Use caution against splashing in your face. But this always disinfects and deodorizes that smelly place in my home.

clean it often.
as soon as something spill is on, clean it. otherwise it will get stinky and dirty too!
and wipe the sink with dry cloth every night before sleep to keep it dry, or the minerals will clog on the surface and form white spots.
try not to leave things in the sink overnight.

Bleach and a little vinegar..if it is still there, try some drano incase of a grease build up, then retry the bleach after the clog has been removed.

If it smells bad, you probably have all sorts of "gunk" in the pipes; I'd get a drain cleaner and freshen it up; If you have a garbage disposal, throw a few lemons (cut up) and oranges inside.
