It would put a hole in the DEA's buget

The fact that pot is illegal is the worst thing about the drug.

Keeping it illegal raises prices and therefore raises the stakes. More people are willing to take risks to supply it. It draws otherwise innocent users into the criminal mindset.

It is not physically addictive. Alcohol is a much harder drug. There is no known lethal dose. It does not make people act crazy, suicidal or any more likely to engage in risky behavior. On the contrary it makes people more timid, and sedentary (while its effects are present)

There is a problem with its interaction with alcohol. When mixed the affects of both drugs can be amplified.

The second worst thing about it is that it has to be smoked and smoking in general is an unhealthy act.

Cons:
1. In a democracy, people should have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. If someone thinks smoking pot will make them happy, who is to argue, as long as they aren't forcing others to breathe their secondhand smoke. If someone's use of pot or other drugs causes them to harm someone else or commit a crime, they should be held accountable for their actions and punished for their wrongdoing, not for using the drug.
2. Hundreds of thousands of non-violent drug offenders can be released from prison, freeing up the jails to hold actual criminals who are harming others and are a threat to society.
3. By making it legal, we can tax it. Not only can we tax purchases, but the people who sell pot will now have no reason to hide their profession and will be more encouraged to report their profits on their income tax returns.
4. The tax money generated from legalizing pot and other drugs can be used to fund treatment for drug addicts who want to get off of drugs. There is currently a lack of funding for drug treatment. Even many people in prison for drug "crimes" are unable to get the help they want and need.
5. Legalizing drugs will eliminate the crime factor, especially the involvement of organized crime. A lot of people's lives will be saved as a result.
6. Elimination of the risk of going to prison will lower the cost of the drugs, enabling more money to be collected in taxes.
7. The police, when they are not busy eating donuts and giving out parking tickets, will be able to spend more time trying to solve real crimes, like murders and robberies. If we don't need as many police, we can fire them and save the taxpayers money. For the most part the police are just a bunch of morons who think that the badge gives them the right to do whatever they want. Good riddance to them.

Pros:
1. If we legalize pot, people might start smoking it wherever they want, harming and disturbing others with secondhand smoke - just like the nicotine addicted cigarette smokers. Its use should be allowed only on private property, not in cars or on the public streets, and not anywhere near children.
