It's called 'the crackin.' its the octopus-like thing that keeps trying to kill jack sparrow and the other ppl on the black pearl. it's also the reason jack sparrow didn't want will turner to kill davy jones; if he had then davy coulldn't have called off the crackin and it would have been after him forever.

Davy Jones? From the Monkees? You know he wears a hearing aid in each ear? And poor Mickey...lost most of his hair. And they finally learned to play guitar. I'm so proud of them...

it was well a sign to show that he was "marked"
this was to show that he had a debt to pay to Davy Jones.
and it went away because he gave him Will (yay! in my humble opinion, he should have gave Elizabeth.)
then came back, because Will escaped.
