I agree with many of you. It is a close call between Puyol and Terry.

Carles Puyol Saforcada (born April 13, 1978 in La Pobla de Segur, Lleida, Catalonia) is a Catalan Spanish footballer who is the current team captain of FC Barcelona. He has established himself as one of the best defenders in world football and is a regular in the Spanish national team.

Puyol is a tough, aggressive defender who has the versatility to play both as a full-back and in the centre. His whole-hearted approach makes him a favourite at his club side, Barcelona. Puyol is a vital member of Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard's team, and his tactical ability and know-how also means he is not a man to pick up many yellow cards or, indeed, injuries, both of which factors have meant that he is an ever present in both Europe and domestic competition. His attacking mentality is a result of him playing as a striker in the early years in his boyhood club La Pobla de Segur, after injury problems with his shoulders forced him from his original position of goalkeeper.

Puyol played for Spain at the 2000 Olympics, 2002 FIFA World Cup, Euro 2004 and the 2006 FIFA World Cup; Puyol has been capped over 60 times. He has also played for the Catalan football team in one unofficial friendly.

[edit]
Early life
Terry was born in Barking, East London and attended Eastbury Comprehensive School. Before being spotted by Chelsea, he played for Sunday League Team Senrab F.C.. This team featured many future stars of the English game, including, Bobby Zamora and Paul Konchesky (both of them now play for West Ham United), Ledley King (of Tottenham) and Jlloyd Samuel (of Aston Villa).

Terry was a West Ham United schoolboy until 1997 when he joined Chelsea's youth team. Terry rose through the Chelsea youth system, playing for the club's Youth and Reserve teams before making his Chelsea debut in October 1998. Between 1999 and 2000 Terry was sent on loan to Nottingham Forest..

[edit]
Chelsea Captaincy
In season 2003-04, his strong, committed, and inspiring displays led to him being handed the captain's armband by manager Claudio Ranieri when Marcel Desailly was out of the side. He played very well in the absence of the French legend, establishing himself as a genuine contender for a first team slot.

Following Desailly's retirement, new Chelsea manager José Mourinho chose Terry as his club captain - a choice which was clearly positive throughout the 2004-05 season. Terry scored eight goals and was voted Player of the Year by his fellow professionals in England.

In September 2005 he was selected as a member of the World XI at the FIFPro awards. The team was chosen by a vote of professional footballers based in 40 countries. Terry has earned a reputation as a tough, committed, no-nonsense defender and an excellent leader on the pitch. In addition, he offers an attacking threat at set-pieces.

[edit]
Working Man
Terry is the current captain of the England national team and he made his debut in June 2003 against Serbia and Montenegro. He played for his country at Euro 2004, and England Manager Sven-Göran Eriksson stated that Terry was the first-choice centre back, ahead of Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell.

In a FIFA World Cup Qualifying match against Poland, Terry had the honour of wearing England's captain armband, replacing Michael Owen as captain after the latter was taken off. He was the heart of the Chelsea defence that was the most well-marshalled in Football league history in the 2004-05 season, conceding only 15 League goals.

In 2005 Terry was voted best defender of the UEFA Champions League tournament, after not only defending and organising his team effectively, but scoring four goals in the tournament including the winning goal against Barcelona in the second round. He has also succeeded David Beckham as the England Captain.

Early in his career, Terry was involved in an unsavoury incident in a West London nightclub with fellow players Jody Morris and Des Byrne. He was charged with assault and affray, but later cleared. During the affair, he received a temporary ban from the national side, which cost him a place in England's 2002 World Cup squad.[1]

Along with Frank Lampard, Claude Makélélé and Petr Cech, Terry is regarded as a part of the "spine" of the Chelsea team. Being a Londoner who came through the club's youth system, he is especially popular with Chelsea fans, although in his youth he supported Manchester United.

[edit]
England Era
He has cemented his place in the England squad by being selected for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In a warm-up match for that tournament against Hungary on May 30, 2006, Terry scored his first goal for England, the team's second in a 3-1 victory. Despite an injury scare in a friendly against Jamaica, he recovered to play in England's opening fixture against Paraguay, a 1-0 victory.

In the next match against Trinidad and Tobago, he made perhaps the most spectacular save of the game. In the game's 44th minute, Carlos Edwards beat England's Paul Robinson to a cross and as Stern John bundled a header towards the goal, Terry cleared the ball off the line with an overhead kick.

In the quarter-finals match against Portugal, Terry played the entire match, but England lost on penalties and he was left in tears with his fellow players. Six days later, he was the only English player to be named in the tournament's all-star squad.[2]

On 10th August 2006, Steve McClaren named John Terry as his England captain, succeeding David Beckham. The new England Head Coach also confirmed that Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard will be vice-captain. McClaren said "Choosing a captain is one of the most important decisions a coach has to make. I’m certain I’ve got the right man in John Terry. I’m convinced he will prove to be one of the best captains England has ever had."

John Terry scored a goal on his debut as Official England Captain, in a friendly international against Greece. This was the first goal of the match and, as such, the first goal during McClaren's reign as manager. When celebrating he kissed his new captain's armband.

Terry is one of four national team captains in the current Chelsea team, along with Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast captain), Andriy Shevchenko (Ukraine captain), and Michael Ballack (Germany captain).

[edit]
Personal life
Terry currently lives in Oxshott, Surrey. His older brother Paul is also a professional footballer, but plays in a lower division, currently for Yeovil Town.

Terry is brother-in-law to West Ham United left-back Paul Konchesky. His sister is married to Konchesky.

Since May 18, 2006, John and his fiancée Toni Poole are also the proud parents of twins, a boy (Georgie John) and a girl (Summer Rose). This was further celebrated after Terry's goal for England against Hungary, when he performed a "baby-rocking" celebration.

History
[edit]
Club Career
Ferdinand signed as a schoolboy for West Ham United in 1992 while a student at Blackheath Bluecoat school and became a professional player under their youth system. He showed immense promise, and was likened to the late Bobby Moore, the former West Ham and England captain. He made his first team debut on 5 May 1996 as a substitute in 1-1 home draw against Sheffield Wednesday.

He joined FA Premier League football club Leeds United in November 2000 for £18 million, then a British record. In August 2001, he became the captain of Leeds.

On 22 July 2002, Ferdinand joined another Premier League club, Manchester United, on a five year deal to become the most expensive British footballer in history, and the world's most expensive defender. The fee included a basic element in the high twenty millions, and some conditional elements, which allowed Leeds to tell their fans that the were selling him for over thirty million. Leeds later took a single payment in place of all the contingent elements when they were desperate for cash during their financial crisis. The final book value of Ferdinand's contract in Manchester United's accounts was £31.12 million. [1] This included agents' fees of £400k, with Leeds receiving £30.72M.

Ferdinand went on to win the Premier League championship with Manchester United in his first season. He has also collected runners-up medals in the League Cup (2003) and the FA Cup (2005).

The Duran Duran song "Rio" has been used in football chants both for and against Ferdinand; in fact in 2002, fan Simon Le Bon (Duran Duran's lead singer) promised to re-record one of the football chants if the team won. (They did not.)

Rio's cousin is former English international striker Les Ferdinand, while his brother Anton is currently a first choice centre back for West Ham United. He and his brother held an informal competition on how many goals they could score during the 2005-06 season (neither being prolific goal scorers), which Rio won 3-2.

Before December 14, 2005, he had never scored a goal for United, despite Rio coming up for nearly every corner kick and attacking free-kick. It was only against Wigan Athletic, where he finally scored, en-route to a 4-0 victory over their opponents. He then scored a last minute winner aginst winner against Liverpool at Old Trafford possibly his most important Manchester United goal to date.

[edit]
International Career
Ferdinand earned his full England cap as a substitute in a friendly against Cameroon on 15 November 1997. He played for his country at the 1998, 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cup, and as of 7 September 2006 he has 53 caps.

Ferdinand fulfilled his promise as a world-class defender during the 2002 World Cup, where his partnership with Sol Campbell boasted the stingiest defence during the tournament and he was immediately hailed as the finished product as a result for his confident marshalling of the English defence.

However, former England Manager Sven-Göran Eriksson labelled him as "lazy" during the infamous "fake sheikh" scandal.

[edit]
TV presenter
In June 2006, on the day of the England national team's opening World Cup group match against Paraguay, Ferdinand made his debut appearance as a television presenter. Hosting 'Rio's World Cup Wind-Ups,' the England defender found himself in a Jeremy Beadle style role, playing tricks on his fellow England World Cup squad members including David Beckham and popularized the phrase, "You got merked!"

It is also reported that Ferdinand is presently filming a documentary about the murder of schoolboy Damilola Taylor. Ferdinand grew up close to the estate where the 10-year-old was killed in 2000, and, in fact went to the same school at the same time (although in different years) as Taylor. The programme is the first in a series to be fronted by Ferdinand to persuade youngsters away from a life of crime [2]

[edit]
Drug test controversy
In 2003 he failed to attend a drugs test, claiming he had forgotten because he was preoccupied with moving houses. Even still, he took a test and it showed he had no drugs in his system. However, he was still banned for missing the initial test. The FA imposed an eight month ban from January 2004 at club and international level, meaning he would miss the rest of the league season and some of the next along with all of Euro 2004. Manchester United's appeals to have the ban reduced were turned down. John Terry replaced him in the England side until his return on 9 October 2004 in their World Cup qualifier against Wales.

The Rio Ferdinand drugs test saga has caused a huge debate over how footballers found guilty of drug offences (failing or missing tests) should be treated. One of Manchester United's reasons for appealing against the ban was that a Manchester City player had also missed a drugs test but escaped with just a £2,000 fine. Several seasons earlier, Ipswich midfielder Adam Tanner had been banned for just three months after failing a drugs test. In March 1995, Chris Armstrong had become the first Premiership footballer to fail a drugs test yet had returned to the game within a month after attending a brief rehab programme. These precedents led some to claim that Ferdinand had been made an example, and that the lengthening of his ban to cover Euro 2004 is evidence of this. It should be noted that he was paid in full during his ban by the club, around £4 million pounds

[edit]
Radio Controversy
In October 2006, Ferdinand caused controversy by calling Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles a '******' live on air, just days after team-mate Paul Scholes was also in trouble for an alleged homophobic remark.

Moyles jokingly asked Ferdinand: "If you had to, who would you rather go out with - Smudger or Scholesy?" referring to Alan Smith and Paul Scholes.

Ferdinand replied: "That is not my bag that, that is not my game, talking about going out with geezers" and when Moyles suggested he would always prefer Smith, Ferdinand declared: "You’re a ******."

He quickly apologised for what he had said, stating "I'm not homophobic".[1]

[edit]
Personal life
On July 24, 2006 Rio's girlfriend Rebecca Ellison had a son named Lorenz, which is a German name. Rio has been dating Rebecca for five years and they live in a £2million Cheshire mansion

[edit]
Trivia
Many people liken his appearance to contemporary Hip-Hop artists such as Snoop Dogg and R. Kelly.

Rio has played 10 World Cup matches for England, the team in these games have kept 7 clean sheets and conceded just 4 goals whilst he was on the pitch (he was substituted before Larsson scored for Sweden in 2006).

SO HUS BETTER? PUYOL OFCOURSE!

I think that Terry is the best of them

Puyol may do some unpredicablle actions during the match he may get a red card for a stupid mistake

Rio is good but a little slow and he does not concentrate in all maches he plays

Terry is the best because he has two things in his mind

The first is not to let any one scores in his goal.

The second is to win.

Definitely not Rio Ferdinand. Consider his game against Celtic this year in the Champions League, caught out of position at least twice, one leading to Vennegor of Hesselinks goal, another horror show, Borrusia Dortmund. Ball watching, lack of focus and being caught out of position does not make a world class defender. Puyol I feel is over-rated, good own goal against Bremen but he had a poor game against AC Milan, falling over doesn't mean you get a free kick, the goal should have stood. John Terry on the other hand, I can't think of any great howlers, they probably exist. Game in, game out, he's huge for Chelsea and England, leading the defensive line, busting a gut for a goal at corners. Rarely caught out, quick on the cover, reads the game very well. I -really- wish he wasn't that good, I'm a Scot and an Arsenal fan. In some ways I'd seriously like to see if Chelsea could do without him for an extended bout. You sound like a Barca/Puyol fan, think outside of the fun place you're in when you think about that horrible frizzy haircut. We forgave Ray Parlour for it but we always made fun of him on the North Bank.

Terry! He's younger, stronger, faster and specially he is smarter, he understands the game, his positioning better than the other two, specially better that Rio. He still can became even more mature and develop his great skills. He is a leader like Puyol, but he reached that status younger than Puyol. Last, he scores more the the other two, together...

this is definitely a tough choice. But i'd say it would be Terry then Puyol then Rio

Puyol and Terry are difficult to split but are different types of players. Ferdinand is prone to occasional brain melts at the back and doesn't offer much in terms of a scoring threat.
