in literature, what does symbol mean and what is a good example of it. I need te definiton and an example.

It is a thing that represents another thing. The correspondence of symbols and what they are symbolic can be transcendental so you shouldn't devalue the significance of symbolism. For example, water can symbolize spirituality. So when Jesus walks on water he demonstrates his total mastery over the spiritual world.

a symbol is when a word signifies something else. For example, if the word rose appears, it could signify beauty, or something else. It doesn't necessarily have to be a rose (flower) that the author is talking about.

a symbol can be a letter, figure, or other character or mark or a combination of letters or the like used to designate something...

an example could be.....: &-- which is a symbol for "and" ..meaning also...

or it could be : prince- he was considerd a symbol..he represented the stages of an adult life: musical prodigy, sensual beast, agitated iconoclast, careful recluse and content, revived entertainer.
