I was once told by a psychologist that "in general, people with IQ's of 100-110 don't tend to go to college, people with IQ's of 120 or so tend to go to college and become, say, teachers or business people, and people with IQ's in the area of 130 tend to be on the level of physicists." I'm guessing a doctor is likely to have an IQ of 130.

One thing to keep in mind, though, and that people can "specialize" in different types of thinking skills; so there can be such a thing as a doctor who is very skilled at his/her medical specialty but who may lack the type of thinking ability needed to have good "people skills" with patients. (They actually teach this in medical schools because it is apparently a common problem in doctors.)

From what I've seen, I can't help but suspect that when it comes to a Ph.D. an IQ of lower than 130 is probably not unheard of.

(It is generally referred to as an "IQ" or "IQ score" rather than "IQ number".)

Well, relate it to the average for a university degree. Pass degree up to 120, 3rd class hons 125 approx, 2nd class 135, 1st class 145, PhD 150 and up.

Med school is tough, really really tough for a 120, but not impossible with hard work, tough enough for a 130, even a 140 will be stretched by the end of it.

Doctors ordinarily have high IQs since they have to demonstrate mastery of lots of difficult concepts. However, attitude often is more important than raw intelligence. Learning may come with more work to some doctors than others, but knowing how to play the game and having good study habits and limply having the ability to work long hours are likely more important than raw smarts.

IQ dont affect someone's choice of career. True you cant be stupid to be a doctor, but even someone with regular IQ can be a doctor if he/she has the heart to become a doctor and tries really hard.

There's a difference between being intelligent and doing well in school. I've met stupid intelligent people. The average MD has an above average IQ.

It would depend on 2 things.

1) What kind of a doctor are we talking about?

2) What country the 'doctor' is from because doctorate in anything is different all over the world.

And, a 'doctor' isn't definitely smarter than the non-doctors. Some factory workers are smarter than doctors.

Hope this helps.

Hopefully a score with more than 2 numbers :-) If not, I sure would not want that doctor working on me!

Something I have learned through hard experience.

Don't assume that doctors are more intelligent than you.
