Get one of those lights that you can time to come on at night then turn off in the morning. Tell your neighbours that you will be away so that if they hear something they know it will not be you. Leave some washing on the line so people think you are still home. Cancell all deliveries like newspaper and get mail held so it is not in your box. Ask a neighbour to park in your driveway.

For one, don't announce it in yahoo questions that you are leaving.
..... Never mind.....
Anyway, here goes:
1) Ensure all doors and windows are locked.
2) Be sure to turn off all appliances, irons, etc.
3) Ask your letter carrier to stop the mail for the time your gone. Thieves notice these type of things if a mailbox is stuffed full.
4) Board the pets in a kennel, at a friends, or take then with you.
5) Get a close friend to check on the house. Leave your hotel phone number with them
6) If a friend or neighbor you trust is not available, get in touch with the police general number and ask them to put you place on a house-watch while you are gone.
7) Water the outside plants and mow and tidy up the yard. Make it look like you are still there. DOn't advertise to thieves that your bicycles are on the front lawn and your not home.
8) If you can, have your phone forwarded to where you will be staying or a cell phone. So if a thief calls, they will get a live person on the line.
Otherwise, check your answering machine about daily. Return
calls if you want them to think your are still in town.
9) Leave an outside light and at least one inside light on. Alsom this helps if you come home late on the last day.
10) Close all the curtains /blinds so people cannot see in.
As Harry Potter fan sites say, "Constant Vigilance."

Eliminate the obvious signs that you are gone. Call the post office and have your mail held for the 6 days. Make sure the paper isn't delivered while you are gone (you can temporarily stop delivery). Ask a neighbor to check for any unexpected packages that might be delivered and have them pick them up for you while you are away. Get a light with a timer that comes on at odd times... you can even hook it up to your TV to come on at night to seem like you are at home and watching TV. Make sure you have window locks - and that they are all locked. Make sure you've locked all your doors (obvious, but some people miss the garage door or side doors). If you are really worried about home invasions, you can contact your local police department and let them know you are going out of town and see if they will drive by your property every so often to check to see if it is okay... I did this in my town and they were more than willing to comply... they knew that if someone was at my house while I was gone, it wasn't me... they actually caught someone trying to break into my house and averted a robbery. If you can afford it, get an alarm system that notifies the local police department if someone breaks in.

Have the post office hold all your mail from the day you leave until the day you return. As well have newspapers held and let the police dept know so they can keep an eye on things. Also invest in a timer that turns your lights on and off would be a good thing people will think you are still home at same times.

The best situation is getting a trusted friend or relative to house-sit for you while you're away and park his or her car in your driveway. If that's not possible, before you leave, you should turn on a radio to a music station, loud enough that someone standing on your porch would be able to hear it (but not loud enough to get your neighbors riled). Close your blinds but leave some lights on inside. Get someone you trust to collect your mail for you or ask the post office to hold it until you get back, as a crammed and unemptied mailbox tells a thief that you are away from home. A few days before you leave, check all the locks, including the window locks, to see that they are functioning properly. Lock all windows before leaving. If you have something extremely valuable, such as jewelry and the like, you might want to store it somewhere that a thief would not expect to find it. If you trust your neighbors, you might want to mention to them that you will be traveling and would appreciate their keeping an eye on your home and calling 911 if they observe anything out of line.

I just had my hot water tank replaced & the service man recommended that if I was away for >2 days I should turn the dail to 'vacation' then turn the water off. I thought that was a bit much. He reasoned that if the tank should leak or 'blow' the water would just flow & flow until you came home. Some insurance companies may not cover this type of damage if you have been away for an extended period of time. I personally would only consider this if I was away for >2 weeks.
Other tricks, have people pop in, make it looked 'lived in', pick up mail etc.... You can also ask neighbours to park one of their cars in your laneway... etc The best thing is to try to make it look like you are not away.
Cheers

Have the Post Office hold your mail.
If get a newspaper have it stopped while you are gone.
Leave a light on or put some lamps and such on a timer.
Have a friend or relative house sit or at the very least have them check on things. In place of timer they can turn off or turn on different lights.

Advise trustworthy neighbors that you will be leaving and if they see anything out of the ordinary, to call police. Also, if you have family near by or a good close friend, have them stop byb once a day to check things out, pick up mail, paper...etc...

besides an alarm system, buy a light timer and set it for certain lights to go on in the house, like your bedroom around 10pm and then to shut off around 11....you can also contact the post office to hold your mail so it doesn't pile up...let your neighbors know and they can keep an eye out as well

make sure all your windows and doors are locked. Put lamps on timers to go on and off at the normal time you would have them on and off. Stop your mail and paper delivery. Close your window coverings. Have a neighbor or friend look on your place and remove any flyers or junk if it is put on your door.
