first off astrology doesnt recognize it, however with the change over time of the constellations Ophiuchus lies between scorpio and saggitarius. which would mean it would actually be the 9th zodiac and bumping up all of the other signs.
to make its not really added to the zodiac because it wont really fit, 12 signs is "neat" as there are alot of paterns that fit perfectly to the 12. and Ophiuchus actually seems like the scorpio/saggi cusp anyways ...

The Zodiac has been changed before or a different one followed previously. There used to be 13 signs a long time ago, then it was changed to 12. Some ancient civilizations followed 18 signs. There may even have been a Zodiac of 9 signs. There was also a time when Libra didn't exist, it was Virgo and then Scorpio.
Now it's changed again?
No matter how many signs are used, all the signs are actually derived from the constellations. We still have parts of other constellations intruding into the 12 constellations of the Zodiac that make up the ecliptic belt (the narrow band through which the planets travel).
The 12-sign Zodiac has been in use for thousands of years by many different peoples. It has served us well and we have a huge amount of statistics and info about it. I doubt it will change any time soon.

Ophiuchus, the Serpent tamer, located as mentioned between Scorpio and Sagittarius is just one of the many names proposed for the 13th sign of the Zodiac.
Since the 1960s a 13th sign has been "discovered" say approximately every five or ten years, but nothing more has become of these "discoveries."
On a clear night in Berlin during the Potsdam Conference (July 1945) certain observers thought they saw, viewed, discovered (what ever) the 13th sign, but this was between Capricorn and Aquarius and given the German name *Brennschluss* which means "fuel cut-off." Had someing to do with those German V-2 rockets and the beginning of the space age. This of course was immediately "filed" away by American bureaucrats, yet not forgotten.
In the 1760s while measuring the boundary line between Pennsylvania and Maryland the Royal Astronomer Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon believed also to have observed a 13th sign (between Aquarius and Pisces) as written: "an extra sign of the Zodiac, tho' of course running a bit narrower,— yet it might stretch out North to South, perhaps even all the width of the semi-Circle,— a Dragon? a Pennsylvania Rifle? a Surveyor's Line?"
So who and what is next? Or must we wait for the extra-terrestrials to arrive? Then we might just have 24 signs!

it's in between Scorpio and Saggitarius, also called Serpentarius, astrologers thought it was easier to just make 12 signs because it would be more equal... it's represented by a man wrestling snakes...that's all i know, but you can find more info in wikipedia.com
