Depends on the trap. Some have artificial bait already on them - looks like chopped peanuts. Otherwise, peanut butter is definitely the best.
I've used them for about a year and the peanut butter works like a charm.
But remove the trap as soon as possible. The dead mouse will first emit a smell that warns off other mice and they'll just move to a different location. Also - don't forget where you put the trap. We did. Man - what a smell.

Before I start let me say that peanut butter works best (Better than Cheese) but not good for glue traps as the oil in the peanut butter will serve as a free card out of jail for Mickey, then again most people that had problems with a mouse know this. Working with glue traps what u want to do is to block the whole width of the entrance to the kitchen or where ever u think they traffic the most, you don't have to use bate because no matter what, they will go over it and will get stuck.
PS: Buy the big ones I think they cover more for the price.
Now I under stand Amy (a few comments above me) but is not like animal hunting where u kill for pleasure, instead u r doing it for you or your family as u don't know where they came from and is not like a mouse from an animal store where u know they don't carry a disease and if u have small kids like me, you don't want to take the chance they might get bitten or sick. Comes down to priorities ( Mickey or your family) so if u find out of a better way of disposing of them please let me know.
PS: why don't u ask the pest controllers u spoke of and see what they do for a more humane way of disposing of them before u send them to the big Disney Land in the Sky !!!.

Why would you use such a cruel and inhumane trap. It does not kill the animal just glues its feet to the trap-then you will have to kill it A lot of animals frantic in their plight when stuck on glue traps will chew through their limbs to get off and away-Can you imagine the fright, the suffering.? A regular mouse trap usually kills the mouse---I never use anymore but fixed openings where can get in-a few got into my garage and set a regular mouse trap-did not kill it but had it trapped by the back(just about dies ) but had no choice but to hit it to kill-the mouse screamed and it took a long time to get that awful sound out of my mind-poor mice/mouse was just trying to find food. Please do not use the glue trap but get a regular mouse trap for they usually kill it-also mice and insects etc will not be in your kitchen if no way in your house-look and find it and seal-mice pee all the time and also I make sure no crumbs etc on the floor. Be humane and God will bless you for it

Forget the glue trap. Bait a Victor brand trap with peanut butter. Crush that little bugger's head.

You don't have to. But it wouldn't hurt. A little Peanut butter on it should help. May sure that you get the glue trap close to the wall. That's where most mice run.

I've used a piece of raw bacon in a regular trap. I would hear the trap snap within 15 minutes after turning off the light. Works for me.

Don't use those glue traps, the only mistake this mouse had made is coming into your house looking for food and shelter. I'm not trying to sound like a bleeding heart but there are more humane ways to handle the situation. I wouldn't want a mouse in my house either but come on, there are better ways.

Put a small dollop of peanut butter or cotton ball in the middle of it. They can't resist the aroma of PNB, and area always on the look-out for nice comfy nest-building materials (hence the cotton). Turn off all the lights and get quiet. If the PNB or cotton is gone the next AM, your mouse is too big for sticky paper, and it's time for a trap!

The glue trap itself should already be scented of peanut butter. I have pest control come to my house every 3 months and their glue strip are scented and due great. They are also really good for catching spiders and roaches.

I hate mice! My sister put those kind of traps down, and sometime she used bait, sometimes not. It's not really necessary. One time I spent the night at my sisters house, and in the middle of the night we heard tiny screams! We ran downstairs into the kitchen and found a mouse on one of those traps, "just " finishing chewing off his leg so he could escape! These mice actually "struggle" to death! Uh....good luck!
