Follow the money. You can bet that those who want to keep it illegal are somehow profiting from doing so.

If you ask any educated person, they will tell you that alcohol is a drug. Yet, it is legal, and is available to the youngest of our population. My opinion is that if it grows from a seed, then it is a plant. Just like tobacco is a plant, just like the hedges in my yard are plants. Hemp used to quite abundent, and used to grow wild all over the country.
I think marijuanna should be legal. The notion that it leads to harder drugs is just that, a notion. Lifestyle leads to drug abuse. I have seen people use cannibas for years, then just stop. Occasionally, after five, ten years, they decided to use again. Definatately not addictive in my opinion. On the otherhand, I have seen people drink alcohol, and not be able to stop, until they lost their marriages, jobs, homes and personal dignity. And I am not talking about hard liquer either, I am talking about beer. Have you ever stood in line at the 7-11 and watched the people on their way home from work, they just have to stop and get a six pack, or twelve pack. That just gets them through the nite. And the next day, they are standing in line again. Pitiful.
Alcohol leads to violence alos. I have never seen anyone, use cannibas, and get into violents fights, wreck a car, etc. Alcohol, does all of that to people. People die from alcohol. Probably more than die from cigarettes. Don't quote me on that. You have to figure in, car wrecks, liver disease etc.
If you want more information on the criminalization of cannibas, google, The LaGuardia Report. This was a study done by the former New York Mayor on the effects of cannibas, during the height of the Reefer Madness Era. This research debunked everything the government told us about the effects of cannibas. And it actually showed some benifits, in the areas of memory, learning etc.
Good luck with your report.

Simply because a very large number of people can't even use alcohol responsibly and the costs to society, in both money and grief, is enormous.
Adding another drug to the mix will only introduce a whole new segment of the population to the problems of addiction.
The all too often heard quote would change from "drinking" to the new, "I drive a lot better when I'm high."

it shouldn't the only reason it is still illegal is because the government does not know w\how to tax the people for it. i think they should just make it legal and they would have less people in prison and then they would have more room in jail cells for the criminals that are killing people and then the police would have more time to find them rather than searching people for Mari-Jane.
