I have a couple of oscars but have been told most other species will not get on with them. Can anyone help with other choices.

Oscars will eat almost any other fish. That's why so many of them live in the sewers; because frustrated owners have flushed them after they ate all the more expensive fish in the tank.

How big are the Oscars and how big are the Gouramis? I had two Oscars that lived in the same tank with my blue Gouramis for over a year. That is until Katrina came through and killed my fish. But I'm not bitter, not at all. No, actually don't put them in the tank if the Oscars are already there. You can add Oscars, little Oscars (think small), to a take that already has an established community and everything should be fine, but If you add anything it becomes food. Unless it is significantly bigger than the Oscars.

I had 2 oscars, bought them when they were babies. They lived together with Red tail sharks, Gouramis, angel fish and about 3 suckers (Brisle nose catfish, sucking fish). Because they grew up with them, they didn't eat them. As the oscars grew I removed the gourami and sharks so they'd have more room to swim. One of the oscars died- he jumped out! :( The other continued with the suckers. I put a cichlid in with it (it had no home) and he and the oscar got along fine - the oscar was 3 times his size. So those and sucking fish are fine, they're too quick for oscars. It helps if u have rocks or ornaments though, sucking fish rarely like to be exposed, they love living on objects. As for gouramis, it's safe when the oscar is at a young age- but I wouldn't trust is because gouramis are slow swimmers.
Sucking fish also keep ur tank clean - the oscars are pretty grotty.

Oscars do best if kept alone. However, you can select as tank mates other large South or Central American Cichlids, though it is imperative that you select ones that are neither too aggressive nor too passive, as the aggressive ones will beat up your Oscar and the passive ones will get beaten up... Some of the medium sized Pacu can also make good companions for an Oscar. If you do want to keep your Oscar with other fish, the fish should either be raised together or should be moved into a new tank together so that none of them have an established territory.

Fishman's right, oscars are feeding machines and for the most part, anything that will fit in their mouths they'll try to eat. Like he said, if they're small and not used to feeders, they may get along ok, but I wouldn't waste the money trying it. I've had oscars with many other kinds of fish, some that were small enough for them to eat, and they didn't because they "grew up" with them. But if I added a new fish to the tank that was small enough, he chowed.

depending on the size of each fish it should be ok. I have had many oscars and many gouramis and they have all gotten along together just fine with one exception (I had an oscar that tried to eat anything that moved until he tried to eat an oscar twice his size)

I would recommend against putting a gourami in with the oscar. You can put red tail black sharks in with them, cat fish, plecos, and some cichlids, as long as they are roughly the same size as your oscar and that your tank is big enough to house them all so they all have enough space to move and hide.

No. There are very few fish you can put in with oscars, Adult flowerhorns are a good choice or any large cichlid. You would be better rehoming the oscars then you can have more of a community aquarium.

Nothing-- Oscars eat other fish. you should either be happy with the oscars or trade them for something else.
