I remembered seeing a carving in a mountain side. Some what like the presidents in mount rushmore. I am traveling and cannot find any info onthis carving.

Correct, it is in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It is the Crazy Horse Memorial.

It is not far from Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota. It is called Thunderhead Mountain and they are carving Crazy Horse mounted on his horse. It is pretty awesome and will take years to finish.

You might be thinking about Crazy Horse Memorial. It's not done yet, but is being created near Mount Rushmore.

Sounds like the Piasa Bird on the Bluffs along the Mississippi River in Alton, Illinois. I grew up down there in Alton. It's a really great site.
