I agree to Jay and Froggy.
I personally do get what kick you get out of paid sex, but if you want to do it, AMS red light district girls are as safe as prostitute can be. They do have to go through regular medic exam but this check up is as good as their next customer's bill of health. BTW, 18 months ago (when I left), price list were still posted on the windows (if it is not, be even more careful) and the going rate was 60 Euro for 30minutes. it might have gone up a bit since then.
And to all other who point the finger and judge: if both parties are consenting adults, it's their business. The question was not is it moral to use a prostitute in AMS! so please back off.

Probably safer than anywhere in the world. Crime is no problem its all police controlled. Condom takes care of STDs. You can also order a prostitute to your hotel for a period of time bit more expensive, but beautiful girls (Caribbean and so) and more comfortable. The girls in the windows are cheapest, but not so good looking and back room business is not very sensual.

I used to date a girl who lived in Amsterdam many Years ago, I would visit Her reguarly.
Prostitution is legal in the Netherlands and as such anyone working as a prostitute is subject to pay taxes and submit to regular medical exams.
This does not guarantee you will not catch some type of infection but it certainly lessens the risk, compared to your chances if you chose to use the services of a prostitute in a Country where the profession is illegal.

You will not find a better, safer, or less expensive red light district than Amsterdam's.

The girls are checked weekly for STDs.

All customers must wear condoms.

There are no pimps. Each girl is an independent "contractor."

They all belong to a sex-worker union and have medical and other benefits.

"go use the prostitutes"
Wow, you opinion on women is high i suppose. It's human beings BTW, not robots nor toys.
"anybody has tried it and has it been good?"
What kind of answers do you expect? "Yeah, I'd give it a 8 out of 10... the commercials wasn't lying, I'd recommend it to all of my friends"?
Please, for your own sake and the dignity of the rest of humanity, try to get love there both are enjoying it, no one is considered less than a human and you actually have some of your own self-respect left.

I'm sure there's not a big problem with crime, its a regular business.
I'd be worried about STD's though.

Just smoke some hash and ignore the whores.

Where did you grow up, in a cardboard box? Any personal contact with a prostitute, whether male or female, can be perilous. Compare it to swimming in the local toxic waste dump.

Dangerous to have sex with people who have had sex with thousands of other people ? Gee, no one really has STDs . . . how could that be hazardous ?
( ps: there is no cure for the viral ones, in case you haven't done your homework )
